Summer is approaching: prepare your skin

As the sunnier months approach, my patients often ask me questions about skin care to keep their complexion glowing and prevent the signs of aging. Two medical (prescription) ingredients I frequently recommend in advanced dermatological routines are tretinoin andhydroquinone. These powerful treatments, used properly, can transform the quality of your skin - provided they are integrated thoughtfully and always accompanied by rigorous sun protection.

Tretinoin: the standard for cell renewal

Tretinoin (or retinoic acid) is a vitamin A derivative known to stimulate cell renewal, improve skin texture, smooth fine lines and prevent blemishes. It's a must-have for anyone wishing to target the signs of aging or improve overall skin radiance.

However, tretinoin can make the skin more sensitive to the sun. This does not mean that it should be stopped in summer, but rather that the frequency of use should be adapted (for example, 2 to 3 times a week) and photoprotection measures reinforced.

Hydroquinone: an effective solution for pigmentation spots

Hydroquinone is a depigmenting agent used to treat brown spots, melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Its efficacy has been proven, but it must be used under medical supervision for a limited period, often as a 3-month course of treatment.

Here again, sun exposure can reactivate hyperpigmentation. So it's vital to avoid prolonged unprotected exposure, or the spots you've been trying to erase will reappear.

The key to every skin treatment: sun protection

Whether it's tretinoin, hydroquinone or other powerful active ingredients, no treatment will be effective in the long term without appropriate sun protection. This means:

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen every morning, even if the weather looks overcast.

  • Reapply every two hours for prolonged exposure.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and avoid the sun during peak hours (11am-4pm).

  • Don't rely solely on make-up with SPF: it's a complement, not a sufficient barrier.

Integration of prescription care and sun protection

Prescription skin care products such as tretinoin and hydroquinone can do wonders for your skin, but they're not without their demands. As we enter the summer season, it's essential to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays to maximize the benefits of these treatments while avoiding unwanted side effects.

As always, I encourage you to consult a healthcare professional before introducing any medicated products into your routine. Every skin is unique, and personalized guidance is the best guarantee of long-lasting, safe results.

Take care of your skin, and it will repay you.
