What is lipoinjection?

Lipoinjection

Lipoinjection (or lipografting) is a cosmetic surgery technique that involves injecting autologous fat (from the patient's own body) into certain areas of the face to add volume and improve skin quality. It is often performed in conjunction with a face-lift to improve overall aesthetic results.

The procedure

The procedure begins with the extraction of fat from certain parts of the patient's body, often from the abdomen or thighs. This fat is suctioned out using a small cannula through incisions of around 1.2 millimeters. It is then purified and prepared for injection into targeted areas of the face, such as the lips, cheeks or temples.

Since lipoinjection uses the patient's own fat, it's a natural way to add volume to the face and rejuvenate the skin. However, only 30% to 50% of the fat injected will remain permanently. It may therefore be necessary to maintain the result with injectable fillers (such as hyaluronic acid) after surgery.

Nanofat

Another related technique is Nanofat, which involves injecting liquefied fat into specific areas to improve skin quality and coloration. The fat is aspirated and purified as with regular lipoinjection, but then passed through a series of increasingly fine-meshed sieves that transform it into a liquid. This oily liquid, rich in stem cells, is injected into dark circles, hands or décolleté to change skin quality and color. On the face, this is a very interesting technique for patients with pronounced dark circles.

While lipoinjection can be seen as adding volume, Nanofat injection can be seen as adding vitamins to the skin. Both techniques are highly relevant in facial plastic surgery to maximize the result and give a rejuvenated, natural look. I use lipoinjection in almost all my facial surgeries. For examples of my results, please see my facial surgery page.
