Everything you need to know about Botox®

As a plastic surgeon, I regularly have patients ask me about Botox® injections. Botox® is one of the most popular treatments for reducing facial lines and wrinkles, but it's important to understand how it works and to have realistic expectations.

First of all, Botox® (also known as Dysport® and Xeomin®) is the trade name for a botulinum toxin. This toxin has been used in medicine for many years to treat a variety of conditions, including muscle spasms, migraines, ophthalmic conditions and excessive sweating, among others. In plastic surgery, we use Botox® to relax facial muscles that cause expression lines.

When injected into muscles, Botox® blocks the nerve signals that contract them. This helps reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, including forehead wrinkles, crow's feet and frown lines between the eyebrows (glabella).

Botox® treatment is generally quick and easy. It is performed in a doctor's office and does not require anesthesia. Botox injections are administered with a fine needle, making the procedure relatively painless. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.

The effects of Botox® begin to be visible within 2-3 days of treatment, with maximum results apparent after 14 days. These effects last approximately 3-6 months. Patients may therefore choose to receive Botox® injections 2-3 times a year to maintain their results.

It is important to note that pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as people with certain neuromuscular conditions, should not receive Botox® treatment.

It's also important to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner to perform Botox injections. A poorly trained or inexperienced practitioner can lead to undesirable results or complications.

Ultimately, Botox® injections can be an excellent way to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. If you are considering Botox® treatment, I encourage you to consult a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss your options and determine if treatment is right for you.
