Liposuction

  • The technique of liposuction surgery

The surgery is done using cannulas requiring small incisions of a few millimetres to remove fat from unwanted areas. It can be applied to all parts of the body. The fat removed can be transferred to other areas where volume is lacking (e.g. buttock areas). The limiting points of the surgery are: the quality of the skin and the quantity of fat to be treated. The surgery is usually done under general anaesthesia, but can be done under local anaesthesia with sedation, depending on the tolerance and complexity of the case.

  • Recovery

Keep well hydrated to replace lost fluids. Wear the compression sleeves provided. Rapid mobilisation is strongly suggested. Dressings are removed after 24 hours. Showering is allowed afterwards. Gradual resumption of activities after surgery is desired. It is preferable to resume activities as soon as possible after surgery. Resumption of physical exercise is rapid depending on the patient's tolerance. Return to work after one week.

  • Complications

Asymmetries in the treated areas, sagging skin. More rarely, injury to deep structures.

  • Preparing for surgery

Stop smoking, avoid blood thinning medication. Respect the fasting period and clean the skin well with an antiseptic soap.

  • What to watch for after surgery

Pressure drop, bleeding from the wound. Purulent discharge from the wound. Fever. Calf pain, shortness of breath.

  • Associated fees

    from $6,825 (plus taxes)

  • Abdominoplasty is mainly intended for people with skin laxity, stretch marks and sagging abdominal muscles. Liposuction does not treat cellulite/stretch marks and does not tighten the skin. The purpose of liposuction is to remove excess fat from a person with sufficiently elastic skin. This surgery is prioritized when the subject has good abdominal muscle tone, little or no excess skin and no stretch marks. In fact, liposuction is indicated and effective when the patient has excess fat under the skin.

  • Yes, liposuction is often combined with other surgeries. The most common combination is abdominoplasty and liposuction. The latter improves the waistline and enhances the result of the abdominoplasty. The surgeon's assessment is essential before determining whether a patient is able to combine liposuction with another surgery.
